Hailing from the south of India, where winter means slipping on a light cardigan and wearing cute printed socks - I found that many of my wardrobe staples were becoming obsolete during any non-summer months in Milan.
One of these wardrobe staples is a simple black cotton maxi with brown leather straps. To say I moped around for the first few weeks of autumn would be an understatement. Don’t get me wrong, Fall is my absolute favourite season; but I didn’t think layering would suit this dress (blame it on my ability to jump to conclusions).
But one day, totally by chance, while cleaning up my wardrobe, I came across a charcoal maxi knitted shrug that I had shoved into a corner somewhere. It was as though the proverbial sun shone through the October rainclouds, enlightening me in the process. A tad bit dramatic but just go with it.
Since then, the only layering I’ve done with my black maxi is with shades of grey. In winter I wore a crop dark grey sweater and woollen stockings underneath – it worked!!!
So now, seasons be damned, I wear my black maxi all year round.
