What’s in a stripe?

They’re horizontal and vertical, thick and super skinny, directionless and structured – clearly stripes have been around long enough for us to have manipulated them in every way possible.

In fact, we’ve categorized types of stripes, given them different names, studied which of them look best in various situations, with respect to different bodytypes and even made RULES on how to wear stripes.

Heard of the Breton stripe? What about the barcode stripe? Maybe pin-stripes? Definitely know the Jail stripe, right?

Even if you haven’t come across such names before, these stripes are all around us.

  • Just peep into your dad’s closet – there’s bound to be at least one pinstriped shirt.

  • Watch an old-time prison movie and check out what all the inmates are wearing!

  • And here’s what a barcode stripe looks like:

The most popular style statement that adopts every possible stripe is the ever-classic Nautical Trend.

Even though nautical stripes were largely associated with ‘Breton stripes’ in the trends’ nascent stages; no more is it limited to a narrowed band of stripe types. The Breton, first spotted on the backs of navy sailors in 19th century-France, has since evolved from military uniform to a classic style staple in just over a century.

How did something that was worn by prisoners and then sailors turn into a world-wide fashion statement? Thank You Coco Chanel.

Sporting this timeless pattern on a boatneck shirt, she gave birth to the ‘Nautical Stripe’. Effortlessy classy, chic and timeless; at the same time edgy, sporty, preppy and playful – this stripe can be anything for any occasion.

I love flaunting nautical styles at work:

stripes look great combined with classic pieces like blazers and capes over high-waisted trousers. Or when simply worn with easy-breezy, loose ‘n flowing fits - perfect for summer moods. This outfit is the third and last in my ‘Nautical Series’ – not because there aren’t any more styles I have to share, but because they’re too many. In fact, it’s a testimonial to the nautical stripe’s enduring appeal that it appears year after year on runways every S/S – making it the perfect transition piece from winter to summer (just before we all jump into a floral frenzy).
