THE ART OF LAYERING (SWEATER WEATHER)

Layering of accessories, especially chunky chains and metal pendants is associated with hipster culture. At the same time, if these accessories were made of wooden beads with traditional motif pendants and tribal inspired elements, one would relate the layering to the current ‘boho’ phenomenon.

Given that layering of jewellery is most often linked to one of these two mega trends, we tend to avoid incorporating this style in our daily outfits for fear of being judged by association. (Which is a real pity, as it not only adds an element of fun, but also speaks of great personal style)

So, I’ve come up with a few tips and quips on how to layer your accessories without falling in either category.

Feel free to mix it up

Don’t pick everything of one type; Go for beads, metal and threads even! I mean, it’s not like we wear only one type of fabric when it comes to clothes.

Stay away from the clichés

If you know an oxidised silver choker is a key piece in a boho-outfit, then scrap that and find something unique, that doesn’t directly link to a trend you don’t want to be associated with.

This particular outfit is by far my most favourite in the ‘sweater weather’ series. It’s a chic combination of comfort and style that can be worn to work or even casually; and the best part is the beautiful colour story of rust, navy and slate that translates into current autumn-winter moods.

Also notice how I’ve chosen three neckpieces of different lengths and materials:

The first is an orange thread with a jute pendant followed by a brown leather necklace with a chunky metal pendant and finally a long chain with a brass owl pendant. The layering here is especially eye-catching as the sweater is an off-shoulder piece, baring just the right amount of skin to make the accessories stand out; which brings me to my last tip with respect to layering jewellery:

Pick a focal point & choose wisely

In this outfit, the bare shoulders and deep neck seem like the best place to layer accessories, so lay off on stacks of bangles and multiple rings. But if you were to wear a full-sleeves turtleneck, then the focal point would best be your hands; buy a set of 20 sleek metal rings (Forever 21 <3) in black/gold/silver and flaunt some bling!
